Rupertinum Salzburg: Museum of Modern Art
The initative to create this facility was taken by Professor Friedrich Welz who offered a major part of his private collection (including all of the graphic prints by Oskar Kokoschka) to Salzburg's provincial government as a donation under the proviso that a long overdue museum of modern art and a center to begin collecting classical and comtemporary art be installed in the city. Professor Otto Breicha is the founding director who secured the prints collection initiated by Welz and another prints collection including contemporary Austrian sculpture and the outstanding Austrian national photograph collection for the museum. In the 13 years since its foundation the Rupertinum has not primarily gained recognition through its collections, although numerous loan objects and loan exhibits have given it the reputation of being the most impressive collection worldwide, but rather through over 30 temporary exhibitions shown each year, mostly arranged by inexpensive cooperations with affiliated institutions and colleagues. Only in this way can the modest annual budget of the Rupertinum afford to bring such notable works of art to Salzburg as paintings and prints by Edvard Munch, Emil Nolde, Georges Rouault, Paul Klee, Gustav Klimt and other modern classicists. The Rupertinum's exhibitions and educational programs are an important enhancement of the city's cultural program since the museum is available to the Salzburg residents for school classes, students and art lovers, and not merely a tourist attraction during the Summer Festival.
