The Mexican tenor Rolando Villazón is famous for his uniquely compelling performances at the most renowned operas in the World. Moreover he is one of the most popular stars and outstanding tenors of our days.
Villazon is incredible versatile being also a successful as a stage director, novelist and TV personality. Extremely successful was his work as a stage director in 2011 with Massenet’s Werter with the Opéra de Lyon and his production of Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore at the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden in 2012. In 2010/11 he served as mentor and juror of the UK’s television show „Popstar to Operastar“, still presenting now and then cultural programs for the BBC and ZDF.
His great career started in 1999 becoming a star overnight by winning several top prizes at Plácido Domingo’s Operalia Competition. In the same year he made his European debut as Des Grieux (Manon Lescaut) in Genoa. In 2000 performances at the Paris Opéra as Alfredo in La traviata and at the Berlin State Opera as Macduff in Macbeth followed.
After his triumphant debut as Alfredo along with Anna Netrebko at the 2005 Salzburg Festival, he continued with Roméo in 2008 and Lucio Silla in 2013 his incomparable success.
