The Days before Christmas enchant Vienna:
Christmas Markets in All Parts of the City...
The Viennese Magic of Christmas in front of the Mayoral Hall is without a doubt the most imposing and most famous of the Christmas markets in the capital city. Many smaller, traditional markets in different locations in Vienna are no less interesting and often offer an unusual, exclusive entrace to the Christmas season.
Beginning November 19th, the Karlskirche, built in thanks for the end of the plague epedemie in Vienna, is daily from 12 to 8 pm the baroque setting for an alternative arts and crafts market. There, one finds not only exclusive gift ideas for Christmas, but also artistically designed day to day products and a lot of fun and amusement for the children. Instead of traditional Christmas music, live music from around the world is performed and authors read from their works almost daily in front of the Karlskirche. And the culinary specialties are also international: Styrian fladen, French crepes, and Tyrolean kiachln are just a few of the Advent specialties served here.
Far outside in the Ottakring, by the Palace Wilhelminenberg, one can find not only the highest ice-skating ring in Vienna, but also the Christmas market with probably the most beautiful panorama view over the city. Beginning November 20, guests can visit for free daily from 2 to 9 pm and will be pampered with hot punches in all the possible local and exotic flavors.
Both, the Palace Belvedere and Schönbrunn are home to advent markets. The small Christmas village in front of the Palace Belvedere opens on the evening of November 19th with the lighting of the Christmas tree and is then open daily from 11 am to 9 pm. Starting November 20th, one can enjoy the imperial atmosphere of the Schönbrunn Advent market. While local and international choirs and instrumental groups prepare guests acoustically for the Christmas season, around 70 exhibitors present their handicraft from handmade Christmas tree ornamentsto delicious baked goods. An additional exhibition of nativities from around the markets close their doors on December 24, the Advent market in Schönbrunn is open until December 26 and continues almost seamlessly into the New Years market (December 28 to January 2).
Many Christmas markets invite shoppers in and around the 1st District at the same time. The "Altwiener Advent Market" on the Freyung has the longest tradition. As early as 1772, the Viennese prepared for Christmas season here. Between the Art History and the National History Museums on the ring, the "Weihnachtsdorf am Maria-Theresien-Platz" has been created, the Spittelberg transforms into a village Advent countryside and the romantic Christmas village of the Alten AKH is a favorite meeting place, especially for young audiences.
Despite the enormous selection of different Christmas markets, a visit to the Viennese Advent Magic in front of the Rathaus is a definite must for every guest of Vienna. More than 3 million visitors are fascinated anew each year by the romantic atmosphere of the Rathaus park with its heart and star trees, from the over 140 imaginatively decorated stands and from the enjoyable entertainment program. Here, one can speak personally with the Christ Child, who here still maintains his place, despite the existence of Father Christmas and Santa Clause. At the Cloud post office, one can send their Christmas cards or bake cookies and make Christmas presents with the children in the "Christkindl Werkstatt" in the Volkshalle of the Rathaus. The Viennese Christmas Market in front of the Rathaus will be opened in a great celebration on November 13 and is then daily open from 10 am to 9.30 pm and on Fridays and Saturdays until 10 pm. The Viennese Advent Market closes its doors for this year on Christmas Eve at 6 pm.
