Das Kehlsteinhaus / Adlerhorst mit Panorama Aussicht über die Berge Berchtesgadens

Experience the Eagle´s Nest

Discover the historic Eagle's Nest with a dark past

The Eagle’s Nest on top of Mount Kehlstein (1,834 m/6,017 ft) is a historical viewpoint high above Berchtesgaden and provides a breathtaking panoramic view over the Bavarian Alps. Originally built by the Nazi Party as a suitably representative venue it is now a cosy mountain-top restaurant.

A Deep Dive into History

To truly understand the history of this site, one must look at its origins. The Eagle’s Nest was built under the rule of the National Socialists as a gift for Adolf Hitler to mark his 50th birthday. Located on the Obersalzberg, a mountainside that served as a second seat of government for the Third Reich, the building was primarily used for state occasions and government meetings.

Despite its dark background, the structure remains a marvel of engineering. During the Second World War, it was not attacked or destroyed; therefore, it has been preserved in its original form right up until today. It is one of the few undamaged monuments of the Hitler era. Since 1960 the Kehlsteinhaus houses a mountain restaurant

Your Visit to the Kehlsteinhaus

This historic survivor of the Third Reich can be reached by taking a special bus or by a three hours foot march offering magnificent sweeping views of the Bavarian Lake Königssee. The road to the Eagle’s Nest, called Kehlsteinstrasse, is a very steep drive with a maximum gradient of 24%. It’s one of the highest mountain roads in Austria and with regard to the construction design there is no other road in the world like this. It was blasted out of solid rock, through previously impassable terrain, in only 13 months. A special bus brings you up to the car park where a 124-metre tunnel leads you into the mountain and takes you to an elevator which brings you in just 41 seconds up to the Eagle’s Nest.

The Kehlsteinhaus / Eagle’s Nest is open from the middle of May to the end of October. During this season you can book our Eagle's Nest Tour.

FAQs Eagle's Nest in Berchtesgaden

Absolutely. Beyond its dark history, the site offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps and the Berchtesgaden region. Visitors can experience a unique combination of high-altitude nature and a sobering encounter with 20th-century heritage. The journey itself, ascending through the mountain via a brass-clad elevator, is a significant part of the experience.

The Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) is unique for its architectural audacity and its location. Against the background of 1930s engineering, it was a massive undertaking, built at an elevation of 1,834 meters on a rocky ridge. Unlike many other structures from that era, it remains largely in its original form, serving as a "document of stone" that provides insight into the scale of the Nazi regime's prestige projects on the Obersalzberg.

While the vast majority of the buildings on the Obersalzberg (including Hitler's private residence, the Berghof) were bombed or demolished after the war, the Eagle's Nest was spared. Due to its position high on the ridge, it was not hit during the Allied air raids in April 1945. Later, the site was saved from demolition in the 1950s and eventually transitioned into its current role as a mountain restaurant and historical viewpoint.
