Domplatz / Cathedral Square

Salzburg Festival

The Salzburg cathedral was built between 1614 and 1628 according to plans by Santino Solari being the largest early Baroque church north of the Alps. Surrounded by the archiepiscopal Residenz, St. Peter’s Abbey as well as the Dom the cathedral square has located on its central point the statue of the Virgin Mary.

In summer the Cathedral Square serves as stage for Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s „Jedermann“, in winter the famous Salzburger Christkindlmarkt takes place here.

Together with the Large Festival Hall, the Haus für Mozart, the Felsenreitschule and the Kollegienkirche, the Cathedral Square forms the festival district.

The square seats 2.544 people. In case of bad wather „Jedermann“ is performed at the Large Festial Hall.
