Visit the largest Bavarian lake in the midst of a breathtaking landscape
Located on an island in the middle of Lake Chiemsee, a lavish castle with an incredible scenic backdrop of Bavarian Mountains was – besides Neuschwanstein – one of King Ludwig II’s elaborate homes.
Close to the Austrian border you enjoy a one hour travel through breathtaking landscapes until you reach the largest lake in Bavaria – Lake Chiemsee. From there you a take a beautiful boat ride to the Herrenchiemsee Island. At arrival you either take a leisurely walk for about 20 minutes to the palace or do as the kings do – take the horse carriage.
Dating back to 1878, the Royal Palace – also called the Bavarian Versailles – is luxury at its finest. Surrounded by most elegant gardens and walkways you enter the “Temple of Fame” full of gold, glass and porcelain. The highlights of the grand state rooms are the staircase, the bedroom as well as the Great Hall of Mirrors. However King Ludwig II’s private retreat was an intimate small apartment, designed in the French rococo style.
Don’t miss Ludwig’s architectural and artistic legacy including many of Bavaria's most important tourist attractions – Herrenchiemsee was his final and most expensive estate.
