Celebrate the Mozart anniversary in Salzburg in 2026!

270 years of musical genius

The year 2026 will be dedicated to one of the greatest musical geniuses of all time, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. We will be celebrating his 270th birthday! For music lovers and culture enthusiasts, this is the perfect time to visit the city that is inextricably linked to his life and work: Salzburg.

Mozart and his hometown of Salzburg: An immortal connection

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on January 27, 1756, in Salzburg in the famous Hagenauer House on Getreidegasse. The charming Baroque city was the defining backdrop of his childhood, his first triumphant European tours as a child prodigy, and his youth. It was here that the young maestro composed his first masterpieces and found his first permanent position as court organist to the prince-bishop (until 1781). Despite later years in Vienna, Salzburg always remained his starting point.

Visitors can follow in Mozart's footsteps and discover the original locations of his life in Salzburg:

Family history: The Mozarts' graves

Leopold and Anna Maria Mozart had a large family, but only two of their seven children survived infancy: Maria Anna Walburga Ignatia (born 1751), known as Nannerl, and her famous brother Wolfgang Amadeus.

Musical talent ran in the family: their father Leopold Mozart was a violinist, assistant court conductor, and music teacher. He recognized and encouraged his children's extraordinary talents from an early age.

Mozart's sister Nannerl was herself a gifted pianist and accompanied her brother on the family's first major European tours. However, her career came to an abrupt end when she reached marriageable age, while Wolfgang conquered the world as a composer and virtuoso. She later married the wealthy Johann Baptist von Berchtold zu Sonnenburg and also spent most of her later life in and around Salzburg.

The final resting places of the Mozarts in Salzburg

Although Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself was buried in Vienna, a significant part of his family rests in Salzburg. An important and often visited place is St. Sebastian's Cemetery in Linzer Gasse

Here, in the romantic arcade cemetery, lies the Mozart family tomb. It is the final resting place of his beloved father, Leopold Mozart, as well as his mother Anna Maria Mozart (who was transferred here from Paris) and his widow Constanze von Nissen (after her second marriage). His highly talented sister, Maria Anna “Nannerl” Mozart, is buried in St. Peter's Cemetery. These places offer a deeply moving addition to the musical trail.
