Things you need to know:
Here is your overview of everything fans need to know about the legendary masterpiece:
The making of the movie
Based on the memoirs of Maria von Trapp, director Robert Wise transformed Salzburg into a huge film set in 1964. What began as an ambitious project by 20th Century Fox developed into one of the most successful musical movies of all time.
The actors
Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as Baron von Trapp became immortalized by the movie. While Andrews took hearts by storm with her charm and voice, Plummer gave the Baron an incomparable depth.
The filming locations
From the dancing scenes in the Mirabell Gardens to the famous gazebo in the park of Hellbrunn Palace to the wedding church in Mondsee: Salzburg Panorama Tours takes you to the authentic locations from the movie The Sound of Music.
The true story of the Trapp family
Movie and reality often differ. The real Maria came to Nonnberg Abbey in 1924 as a teacher trainee. In 1938, the family did not flee across the mountains to Switzerland, but rather took the train to Italy in a rather unspectacular fashion.
The musical The Sound of Music
Before the movie conquered the world, The Sound of Music was already a Broadway hit. The duo Rodgers & Hammerstein created a timeless work that is still regularly performed in Salzburg today.
Songs and lyrics from The Sound of Music soundtrack
Whether “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things,” or the title song “The Sound of Music” – the melodies are part of the world cultural heritage of pop culture.
