2 Days of The Sound of Music Magic in Salzburg
Who doesn’t know the story of the rebellious novice Maria, the heartwarming children, and the strict - but ultimately singing - Baron von Trapp? For many, Salzburg isn’t just a city in Austria; it’s the living film set of one of the most beloved musicals of all time: The Sound of Music.
In just two days, you can discover the highlights of The Sound of Music in Salzburg. To make sure you don’t miss a thing between Edelweiss and apple strudel, we’ve put together the perfect itinerary for the ultimate fan weekend in Salzburg, including the famous Original Sound of Music Tour!
Day 1: City Walk & Visit to the Marionette Theater
Morning: A Walk Through the “Do-Re-Mi” Film Set
Start your day where the children learned to sing, in the Mirabell Gardens in the center of Salzburg. Hop down the steps at the Rose Hill like Maria and the children, or pose in front of the Pegasus Fountain.
Our tip: Go early (before 9:00 a.m.) to have the gardens almost all to yourself.
From there, the path leads you across Residenzplatz (remember Maria’s determined “I Have Confidence” as she splashes in the fountain) up to Nonnberg Abbey. This monastery is not just a filming location, but the place where the real Maria lived. The atmosphere in the church is reverent and beautiful. During your city walk, you can stop for breakfast at one of Salzburg’s wonderful cafés.
Afternoon: Great Art in a Small Format
In the afternoon, a special kind of performance awaits: the Salzburg Marionette Theater. The production of The Sound of Music featuring delicate wooden puppets is world-famous and captures the spirit of the film in a unique, magical way. The performance is suitable for both children and adults and is staged with intricately detailed wooden marionettes.

Day 2: The Grand Sound of Music Tour
The Highlight: The Original Sound of Music Tour
Today is the day! At 9:15 a.m., it’s “All aboard” for the Original Sound of Music Tour by Salzburg Panorama Tours. Why this tour? Because it takes you to places you can hardly reach on foot: out of the city to the filming locations and all the way to Mondsee, where the church scene where Maria and the Baron von Trapp were married was filmed.
The tour lasts about 4 hours and is packed with insider information and, of course, the soundtrack playing over the bus speakers. Singing along is not only allowed, but expressly encouraged!
Afterward, you’ll also have the chance to enjoy the Sound of Music menu featuring “Schnitzel with Noodles” and authentic apple strudel. To do so, you should book the Original Sound of Music Tour & Schnitzel.
If you’d like to take a deep dive into the history of The Sound of Music, a Private Sound of Music Tour allows you to tailor the experience entirely to your individual wishes and interests.
Afternoon: Up to the Summit for the Finale
If you still have energy left after the tour, take the bus near the Panorama Tours bus terminal toward the Untersbergbahn. Bus line 25 takes about 30–35 minutes from Salzburg’s Mirabellplatz to the Untersbergbahn’s valley station in Grödig. The cable car takes you up to nearly 2,000 meters in just a few minutes. The mountain scenery up here is exactly what you see in the film’s opening sequence and dramatic finale. The view is the perfect reward for any fan and a wonderful way to end a Sound of Music weekend in Salzburg.

Important tips for your trip
-
New starting summer 2026: Don’t miss the brand-new Sound of Music Salzburg Museum close to the gazebo in Hellbrunn. It offers a fascinating comparison between Hollywood fiction and the real story of the Trapp family.
-
The perfect accommodation: If you’d like to fully immerse yourself in the world of The Sound of Music, you can book a room at Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron and stay right at an original filming location. As a guest, you can take a walk in the park and stand on the shore where the children fell into the water, it doesn’t get any more exclusive than that.
-
Clothing: Pack a light jacket, even in summer. “The Hills” can get pretty windy in Salzburg, even in summer!
