Things you need to know:

Here is your overview of everything fans need to know about the legendary masterpiece:

The making of the movie

Based on the memoirs of Maria von Trapp, director Robert Wise transformed Salzburg into a huge film set in 1964. What began as an ambitious project by 20th Century Fox developed into one of the most successful musical movies of all time.

The actors

Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as Baron von Trapp became immortalized by the movie. While Andrews took hearts by storm with her charm and voice, Plummer gave the Baron an incomparable depth.

The filming locations

From the dancing scenes in the Mirabell Gardens to the famous gazebo in the park of Hellbrunn Palace to the wedding church in Mondsee: Salzburg Panorama Tours takes you to the authentic locations from the movie The Sound of Music.

The true story of the Trapp family

Movie and reality often differ. The real Maria came to Nonnberg Abbey in 1924 as a teacher trainee. In 1938, the family did not flee across the mountains to Switzerland, but rather took the train to Italy in a rather unspectacular fashion.

The musical The Sound of Music

Before the movie conquered the world, The Sound of Music was already a Broadway hit. The duo Rodgers & Hammerstein created a timeless work that is still regularly performed in Salzburg today.

Songs and lyrics from The Sound of Music soundtrack

Whether “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things,” or the title song “The Sound of Music” – the melodies are part of the world cultural heritage of pop culture.

Frequently asked questions about The Sound of Music in Salzburg

The movie is a global phenomenon because it combines timeless themes such as family, courage, and integrity with the breathtaking backdrop of the Salzburg Alps. The combination of Rodgers & Hammerstein's unforgettable melodies and authentic location photography made Salzburg a dream destination. For many international guests, the movie is the main reason for traveling to Austria, with Panorama Tours' Original Sound of Music Tour bridging the gap between the silver screen and reality.

Yes, the two lead actors enjoyed a lifelong, close friendship. Although Christopher Plummer (Baron von Trapp) was initially skeptical about the movie and jokingly called it “The Sound of Mucus,” he deeply appreciated Julie Andrews. Their professional chemistry is palpable in every scene shot in the original Salzburg locations, such as Leopoldskron Palace. Plummer later admitted that working with Andrews was one of the best aspects of the production.

The Baron's first wife, Agathe Whitehead von Trapp, died of scarlet fever in 1922 at the age of only 31. Her death was the reason why the Baron moved to Salzburg with his seven children and later hired Maria Kutschera, a teacher candidate from Nonnberg Abbey, as a governess. Without this tragic event, the story as we know it today would never have come into being.

For a long time, the movie was hardly known in Austria or was viewed critically because it romanticized the story for Hollywood purposes and portrayed traditional costumes (dirndls and lederhosen) in a clichéd manner. While the world loved Salzburg because of the movie, it took decades for the locals to recognize its cultural and tourist value. Today, the movie is an integral part of Salzburg's cultural tourism and is respected as the work that made the beauty of the region famous worldwide.

The von Trapp family fled in 1938 after Austria's annexation by Nazi Germany. Georg von Trapp was a staunch patriot and refused to join the German navy. Not wanting to sacrifice their moral integrity, they left their villa in Salzburg-Aigen and emigrated via Italy to the United States.

Yes, the real Villa Trapp is located in the Aigen district of Salzburg. Today it is a hotel and can be visited. Important for fans: In the movie, the exterior was depicted by Leopoldskron Palace (lake side) and Frohnburg Palace (entrance).

The family never returned to Austria permanently and built a new life for themselves in Stowe, Vermont (USA), with the “Trapp Family Lodge.” However, individual family members, especially Maria von Trapp, visited Salzburg repeatedly in later years. Today, their descendants maintain ties to their old homeland, and the family's legacy is more alive than ever thanks to the tours offered by Salzburg Panorama Tours.
